    Today in Labor History
    Feb. 22, 2018:
Some 34,000 public school teachers throughout West Virginia struck today in protest of poor pay (they were ranked as the 48th worst-paid throughout the 50 states) and concerns over health care costs. They returned to work March 7 after scoring a 5 percent raise. The strike inspired aggressive teacher action in several other low-wage states including Oklahoma, Kentucky and Arizona.

  • The US, Canada, and Mexico Have a New Deal
    Posted On: Oct 01, 2018
October 1, 2018 | TRADE AGREEMENTS | The US and Canada struck a last-minute NAFTA deal Sunday night. Hours before the midnight deadline, the two countries agreed to a framework for a renewed trilateral agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Newly dubbed the “USMCA” — the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement — it’s basically an updated version of the original North American Free Trade Agreement between the three countries…“USMCA will give our workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses a high-standard trade agreement that will result in freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in our region,” the statement read. “It will strengthen the middle class, and create good, well-paying jobs and new opportunities for the nearly half billion people who call North America home.” Vox  Related: Reliable enforcement of workers’ rights is necessary for the Teamsters to back the deal
